The game is a logic puzzle game in which players solve nonograms to reveal a hidden picture. In 2012, the game was released on the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console in Japan it has never been released overseas. This is one of the few games that can be fully enhanced by the Super Game Boy attachment for the Super Famicom, both allowing full color graphics as well as a two player mode by performing any input on a second controller, a second player is entered in to the game, and players can then solve puzzles cooperatively. For example, Mario's puzzles are timed, while Wario's aren't timed but don't tell you when you've made a mistake as Mario's do.
Each of the two characters have their own puzzles with their own rules. The game features the same gameplay that was present in previous and future games, that involves grid puzzles where, using the numerical clues given, you create an image. The game, despite not baring the Mario label, features characters from the series nonetheless including Mario and Wario.
Picross 2 is a 1996 Game Boy sequel to the 1995 games Mario's Picross and its Super Famicom sequel Mario's Super Picross, which were also released for the Game Boy.
